Christmas Light Takedown and Storage in Milton

Getting lights down in a Milton January is the part of the season nobody looks forward to: frozen clips, snow on the eavestrough and short afternoons. Having the crew that put them up take them down is most of the value of a professional install.

The Electrical Safety Authority's advice is plain: holiday lights and decorations are not designed for year-round use and should come down after the holidays. In Milton the timing works itself out around the weather. The Georgetown climate normals put the average January high at -1.7 Â°C, with a high at or below freezing on about 18 days of the month, so takedown is booked for the milder spells, when clips release and the eavestrough is not packed with ice.

What takedown includes

  • Removal. Every strand, clip, stake and timer taken down, with no tugging that lifts shingle tabs or bends the gutter lip.
  • Testing. Each strand is checked; failed bulbs, cracked sockets and damaged cords are noted, because ESA's guidance is to replace damaged cords and plugs rather than reuse them.
  • Labelling. Strands are tagged by where they hung: front eave, upper gable, garage peak, maple, cedar hedge. Next year each one goes straight back where it fits.
  • Storage or hand-back. Lights are either boxed and returned to you for your own garage, or stored by the installer until next season, depending on what is agreed.

Owning or renting

Two models are common. You can own the lights, in which case they are stored by you or the installer and reinstalled each year. Or the lights can be supplied with the service as a seasonal rental, so the installer owns, maintains and replaces them and you pay for the service each year. Which is offered, and on what terms, is set out in your written quote; nothing here promises a particular arrangement.

Trees and Halton's collection

If you also have a real Christmas tree, Halton Region collects them in early January on your regular collection day. For the 2025–26 season the Region listed the weeks of 5 to 9 January and 12 to 16 January, and trees must have all decorations removed and must not be wrapped in plastic. Indoor tree lights are your own job; outdoor displays come down with the takedown visit. The Region's 311 line answers questions about anything else left over.

Permanent lighting skips this

If you are tired of the January visit as much as the November one, that is the case for permanent lighting: it stays up, it is built for year-round use, and the takedown becomes a change of colour in an app.

Frequently asked questions

When does takedown happen?

Through January, on milder days when clips release cleanly. You choose an earliest date; the crew books the first suitable day after it.

Can I leave the lights up and just turn them off?

ESA advises against it: seasonal lights are not designed for year-round outdoor use, and UV, ice and wind shorten their life. Permanent lighting is the product built to stay up.

Do you store lights you did not install?

Only if they are outdoor-rated, certified and pass testing. Otherwise you will be told what should be replaced before anything goes into storage.
