Milton is not one housing type, and its rooflines show it. Old Milton around Main Street and the Mill Pond is a grid of brick Victorian and Edwardian houses with steep gables and porches, where a light plan follows the trim. Timberlea, Dorset Park and the streets east of Ontario Street are 1970s and 1980s backsplits and bungalows with long, low eaves that are quick to light and look generous when done well. Then there is the Milton most people now live in: Hawthorne Village, Beaty, Clarke, Coates, Willmott, Harrison and Ford, built at a pace that made the town the fastest-growing municipality in Halton, with freehold townhouse rows, semis and two-storeys whose rooflines step up and down across the block. This is the booking line for one vetted, insured holiday lighting installer working across all of it. Seasonal lights go up with clips on outdoor-rated, certified LED, plugged into GFCI-protected outlets, and come down in January into labelled storage. For owners who would rather not do this every November, permanent lighting sits in a slim channel under the eaves all year and is set from a phone: warm white on an ordinary Tuesday, red and green in December, whatever colours the occasion calls for the rest of the year. Every job is quoted in writing after a look at the house.

Holiday Lights in Milton: Rooflines, Weather and the Hydro Bill
A town that doubled its rooflines. Halton Region's summary of the 2021 census put Milton at 132,979 people, up 20.7 per cent in five years, the fastest growth in the Region, living in just over 40,000 occupied dwellings. For holiday lighting that matters in a practical way. A large share of Milton's houses were built in the last twenty-five years, so most rooflines here are vinyl or aluminum soffit and fascia with eavestrough along the front, garage gables pushed toward the street, and an upper storey set back above them. Those houses light beautifully along two lines, the gutter and the gable, and the work is clips on the eavestrough lip and shingle tabs rather than anything fastened into the house. The freehold and condominium townhouse rows that make up whole streets in Willmott, Ford and Harrison add a question the older parts of town never had: whose roofline is it, and does the row want to match. Both are answered before anything is quoted.
Old Milton, Main Street and the gable-and-porch houses. The older streets around Main Street, Martin Street and the Mill Pond are the part of town that rewards a careful plan more than a long one. Steep front gables, bay windows, deep porches and brick that should never see a nail or a masonry screw are lit with clips on the eavestrough and trim, light gauge wiring tucked behind downspouts, and connections kept off the ground and away from walkways as the Electrical Safety Authority advises. Mature trees here are the other half of the display: a wrapped maple trunk or a lit spruce in the front yard often does more for an Old Milton house than another hundred feet of roofline. The Town's own seasonal centrepiece is on the same street: the Milton Santa Claus Parade was listed on the Town's events calendar for Main Street on a Sunday afternoon in mid-November 2024, and owners who want their lights on for parade day book their installation in early November.
Permanent lighting, and why it fits Milton's newer streets. Permanent lighting is a continuous LED channel fastened under the eave or along the eavestrough line, colour-matched to the trim so it all but disappears in daylight. At night it is controlled from a phone: warm white for every evening of the year, red and green in December, orange in October, and whatever colours suit Diwali, Eid, Lunar New Year, Canada Day or a playoff run. On the uniform soffit lines of Milton's newer two-storeys and townhouses, a permanent system goes in cleanly and looks deliberate. It also answers the problem that brings many Milton owners to it in the first place: nobody wants to be on a ladder against a vinyl-sided gable in a December wind. On a townhouse row, the condominium corporation's rules or a freehold neighbour's agreement come first, and the installer will not put fixtures on common elements without written approval from whoever controls them.
November weather and the installation window. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 climate normals for the Georgetown station, the nearest long-record station north of Milton, give November a mean daily high of 7.3 °C and a low of -1.7 °C, falling to 1.1 °C over -6.9 °C in December. Snowfall averages 8.6 cm in November and 29.5 cm in December, of about 136 cm a year, and the station records a low at or below freezing on nearly 28 days of an average December. That is the case for installing in late October and November, when the eavestroughs are dry and the shingles are not iced, and switching on whenever you like. Lights hung in December go up around snow, frost on the shingles and short daylight, which is slower and more expensive. Permanent systems, by contrast, can be installed any month the roof is clear.
Milton Hydro, time-of-use and what LED lights cost to run. Most Milton houses are supplied by Milton Hydro, whose licensed service area is essentially the Town of Milton, with a few listed exceptions. Prices for households on the Regulated Price Plan are set by the Ontario Energy Board, and from 1 November 2026 the winter time-of-use plan charges 18.9 ¢/kWh on weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and 9.1 ¢/kWh after 7 p.m. and all weekend. Owners who chose the Ultra-Low Overnight plan should know its on-peak price is 37.7 ¢/kWh on weekdays from 4 to 9 p.m., exactly when holiday lights look their best. LED strings draw a small fraction of what old incandescent sets did, so the running cost of a typical display is modest either way, but a timer or a schedule in the permanent-lighting app that switches on at dusk and off at 11 p.m. is the sensible default on any plan. The installer sets that up as part of the job.
Ladders, GFCIs and the rules the crew works to. A Milton two-storey puts the eavestrough around six metres up and the upper gable higher still, often over a sloped front lawn, a driveway or a window well. Ontario's Construction Projects regulation requires fall protection where a worker could fall more than three metres, and the crew that comes to your house works to it. The Electrical Safety Authority's holiday safety guidance sets the rest of the standard: lights rated for outdoor use and carrying a recognised Canadian approval mark, GFCI protection on outdoor connections, no more than three strings joined end to end unless the maker allows it, proper clips rather than staples or nails, and at least three metres of clearance from overhead power lines when working from a ladder or lighting a tree. If a house needs a new exterior or soffit outlet, ESA is equally clear that only a Licensed Electrical Contractor may do that work for pay, with a notification filed before it starts.
Serving Milton & Surrounding Areas
Milton's 2021 population and growth are from Halton Region's census summary. Milton Hydro's service area is from its Ontario Energy Board licence schedule, and electricity prices and time periods effective 1 November 2026 are the OEB's Regulated Price Plan. Outdoor lighting safety points are from the Electrical Safety Authority's holiday guidance and its advice on hiring a contractor. Temperature and snowfall figures are Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981–2010 climate normals for the Georgetown WWTP station. The parade listing is from the Town of Milton events calendar, Christmas tree collection rules from Halton Region, and fall protection from O. Reg. 213/91. Condominium rules on exterior lighting are set by each corporation and are not summarised here.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book Christmas light installation in Milton?
October for a November install. The installation window that works best is late October through November, while the eavestroughs are dry and before the first stretch of freezing days; December installs are possible but slower around snow and frost. Permanent lighting can be booked for any month the roof is clear.
Do you put nails or staples into the house?
No. Seasonal lights hang on clips that grip the eavestrough lip, shingle tabs or trim, which is also what the Electrical Safety Authority recommends. Permanent lighting is the exception by design: its channel is fastened under the eave once, colour-matched to the trim, and stays.
What is permanent lighting, exactly?
A slim LED channel installed under the eaves or along the eavestrough line that stays up year-round. It is set from a phone app: warm white most nights, red and green in December, other colours for Diwali, Canada Day, Halloween or a game night. It is the second thing most Milton owners ask about after a season of ladders.
Will my lights work on a townhouse?
Yes, with permission sorted first. On a condominium townhouse the roof and walls are usually common elements, so the corporation's rules decide what can go up and how it is fastened. On a freehold row, the shared roofline is a conversation with the neighbours. Many rows choose matching warm white.
What does Christmas light installation cost in Milton?
It depends on the length of roofline, the height and pitch, the number of gables and peaks, and how many trees and shrubs are included. Planning ranges are on the cost page; a firm number is written after a look at the house or clear photos of the front.
Do you supply the lights or use mine?
Either. Most installs use professional-grade LED supplied with the job, which is outdoor-rated and certified. Your own strings can be used if they are outdoor-rated, carry a recognised approval mark and pass a check for damaged cords and sockets.
Who takes them down?
The same crew, in January, unless you have permanent lighting, which stays. Seasonal lights are taken down, tested, labelled by roofline section and stored or handed back, so next year's install starts with lights that already fit your house.
